The hospice benefit was utilized for cancer patients in their last days almost exclusively in the early 2000’s. Today hospice benefit is authorized for any diagnosis. The guidelines require that the patient’s physician and the hospice medical director certify that the patient is terminally ill and has 6 months or less to live if the illness runs its normal course however hospice does not shorten or prolong life.
